In Auckland in the early 1980s my employer economised by giving me Wednesday afternoons off. I had no doubt what to do with such a windfall! A brisk walk down Symonds St. and I enrolled at the Society of Arts for whatever was available. It was a Portrait class tutored by the Auckland water-colourist Ernestine Maddox, a petite, dignified lady of mature years, iron grey hair in a bun to match her "don't mess with me" attitude! I cried many tears, but owed so much to her encouragement ....
